Details
The Bilhvax vaccine against schistosomiasis, entered its third phase of
development, phase of development in clinical research in Senegal to confirm its
effectiveness before it is placed on the market. To date, the vaccine was tested
among 250 girls and boys infected Senegalese. If the immune response works,
Phase 4 will be launched, or mass production of the vaccine orphan. This will
lead to a national administration to the whole population and the improvement of
living conditions in areas affected by the disease.
In order to limit the rate of infant mortality, researchers french, Belgian and
Senegalese have developed a vaccine candidate: Bilhvax. Two phases of clinical
trials have been conducted which have resulted in a positive test vaccine
quality and safety of the product.
This therapeutic vaccine against schistosomiasis is the result of a cross-border
partnership, involving scientists from Belgium, France and Senegal. INSERM
(National Institute of Health and Medical Research), Institut Pasteur de Lille,
and the spin-off of ULg specializes in biotechnology, Eurogentec, each allowed
the progression of the project results is born twenty years. Eurogentec is a
biotechnology company specializing in the production of recombinant proteins for
therapeutic use in human medicine.
The strong mobilization of public and private partners has promoted the
advancement of research. Indeed, the project is supported by the Walloon Region
and the Nord-Pas de Calais. Their participation is part of a process of
international solidarity. The total cost of the third stage of development of
the vaccine is 10 million. The intervention of the Walloon Region is up to
300,000 euros.
After malaria, schistosomiasis is the second pandemic, the deadliest parasite in
the world. This chronic disease affects nearly 200 million people, mainly people
in the developing world.
Vaccine BILHVAX
Unify skills
In 1995 the parasitologist immunologists led by Dr Gilles Riveau meet
researchers Eurogentec (Belgium). Thus, Eurogentec and scientists Lillois unite
their expertise to define the production processes of the parasite protein in
recombinant form, paving the way towards the formulation of a vaccine in humans.
The development of the vaccine BILHVAX
Since 1996, supported by Inserm and by the European Union, researchers french,
Belgian and Senegalese undertake the clinical development of first and only
vaccine candidate against schistosomiasis BILHVAX they call. Therapeutic vaccine
dedicated primarily to children suffering from the disease, the development of
the vaccine took two pediatric clinical safety studies (France and Senegal), and
three studies in subjects infected to test the safety and immunogenicity of the
candidate ( Senegal and Niger). Very well tolerated in subjects infected (adults
and children), BILHVAX induce an immune response has all the qualities required
to provide protection against the development of pathology bilharzienne.
Among the five candidate vaccines developed in the USA and Europe, only BILHVAX
is still in the race to life, the other could not pass these stages of
development.
