The J79 is a single-shaft turbojet engine with afterburner. It has been manufactured by MTU under license from General Electric since 1970. The engine's first application was the Lockheed F104G Starfighter, and a modified version has been powering the McDonnell Douglas F-4 Phantom II aircraft of the German armed forces since 1973.

Now that production has ended, MTU focuses on the repair and maintenance of the J79 engines.
