Hi
It is very true that an engineer have to perform as manage rather then engineer. So it is very much important to know about manager duties, function, goals etc.
Total function of manager is very large but here I do inscribe the main themes of a modern manager.
1) Planning.
2) Organizing
3) Staffing
4) Leading &
5) Controlling
Each term have large meaning. If you want I will try to describe.

I don't know about ur profession. But as an engineering student i can't see any difference. In my view All engineers are manager, but all managers are not engineer.
This is the main point.
